COMMENT. Rama is the legendary ancient Indian ruler, one of the earthly incarnations of the Hindu god Vishnu, who came to earth to save the world from the oppressions of Ravana, the ten-headed king of the demons called rakshasas. The life and heroic deeds of Rama are described in the Ramayana, the ancient Indian Sanskrit epic. This is the story of the royal exile Rama and his faithful and meek wife Sita. The couple lived peacefully in the backwoods, until the beautiful Sita was not stole by Ravana. Rama went in search of his wife, enlisting the help of three loyal brothers and the monkey king Hanuman. Together, they managed to defeat the army of evil spirits (rakshasas) and kill Ravana himself. Rama is usually portrayed as a black-skinned young man, often armed with a bow and arrow. He is considered the embodiment of Vishnu as an ideal husband, commander and monarch.
